IIMC EDUCATION POINTS AND PROGRAM INFORMATION                         MARCH 31, 2011

Click here for a Word version of this document

The information below is intended for general informational use, and any specific questions about points values, requirements, or credits for education courses should be directed to IIMC staff.

Prior to 2010, the IIMC Education Guidelines allowed an Institute Director to sign off on association programs; this allowed these association programs to earn 1 point per 2 in-class contact hours.

The 1/1/10 Education Guidelines put a stop to this.  However, IIMC will not penalize Virginia Clerks who attended the April 2010 pre-conference program.

Below is a breakdown and explanation from IIMC for the different point allocations for the different venues of education available to our clerks.

 1. IIMC- approved Institute or Academy: 1 point per 2 in-class contact hours

WHAT IS AN INSTITUTE OR ACADEMY?

An Institute program is a program that is solely provided by the Institute Director and encompasses both the CMC and MMC programs. This means that after the Institute Director has collaborated with the State/Provincial/National Education Committee regarding possible topics and speakers, he/she is responsible for all aspects of the

Institute program (selection of topics and speakers, contracts, fees, etc.).  The Institute and Academy program is where IIMC members take certification courses.

IIMC- approved Institutes (CMC) and Academies (MMC) have gone through a rigorous approval process and are affiliated with an accredited four year college or university. Due to this process course review is not required for Institutes and Academies. Institute and Academy programs are listed on our website at: http://www.iimc.com/index.aspx?nid=141

 2. Completion of a professionally-related seminar or course through local State Association that has gone through Course Review: 1 point per 4 in-class contact hours

WHAT IS A PROFESSIONALLY-RELATED SEMINAR OR COURSE THROUGH LOCAL STATE ASSOCIATION THAT HAS GONE THROUGH COURSE REVIEW?

This is a program that is offered by a State Association, which has gone through the IIMC course review process and been pre-approved by the IIMC Education Department.  IIMC reviews the course information to ensure that it complies with the Education Guidelines. In order for a State Association course or program to receive the 1 point per 4 in-class hours, the Course Review form must be submitted and approved for credit by IIMC's Education Department. You can find Course Review information here: http://www.iimc.com/index.aspx?nid=139.

WHAT ARE PROFESSIONALLY-RELATED SEMINARS/COURSES IN APPROVED SUBJECTS?

Professionally-related seminars/courses in approved subjects are courses that are offered outside of the Institute/Academy or the State Association.  A few examples of acceptable courses are Secretary of State, FEMA, State Library and Archives, etc.

These courses should go through the IIMC course review process and be pre-approved by the IIMC Education Department.  IIMC reviews the course information to ensure that it complies with the Education Guidelines.

WHAT IS COURSE REVIEW?

            ● IIMC needs to know what is being taught, how long the course is, and who is teaching the course in order to determine credit. The Course Review form provides the Education Department with this information. In order for a course put on by a State Association to receive the 1 point per 4 in class hours, the Course Review form must have been submitted and approved for credit by IIMC’s Education Department. You can find Course Review information here: http://www.iimc.com/index.aspx?nid=139

NOTE: If the course is approved, this approval should be noted, along with the hours, on the certificate of attendance.

IS COURSE REVIEW MANDATORY?

● Not at all- however in the absence of Course Review the highest amount of points a State Association course can garner will be 1 point per 6 hours of in-class contact hours.

 ·         Professionally-related seminars/ courses in approved subjects: 1 point per 6 in-class contact hours

WHERE CAN I FIND “APPROVED SUBJECTS”?

● A collective and continuously updated list of Approved Subject matter can be found here: http://www.iimc.com/DocumentView.aspx?DID=63. This list is downward compatible for the CMC. Additionally, Course Review (http://www.iimc.com/index.aspx?nid=139) is always available.

WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION PROVIDERS FIT INTO THIS CATEGORY?

●Any course that falls within the Guidelines, but is not provided by an Institute/ Academy, or a State Association. Good examples are the Secretary of State, FEMA, State Library and Archives, etc.

WHERE CAN I FIND INFORMATION ON MY STATE ASSOCIATION?

             ● Information on each State Association is listed on the Municipal Clerk Profiles page located at:  http://www.iimc.com/index.aspx?nid=141
